Our Team

People are our most important resource. Since 2000, the lab has empowered undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral trainees to launch their careers. We have expert technical staff supporting our researchers and positive leadership that is focused on maintaining our intellectual focus and gathering funding support.

Current Laboratory Members

Lori M.N. Shimoda. Research Associate.

  • Lori is an accomplished senior staff scientist specializing in cell culture, protein biochemistry, assays of cellular function, calcium signaling measurement and patch clamp electrophysiology. She earned her BS degree at the University of Madison-Wisconsin and held positions on the US mainland, at the University Of Hawaii Cancer Center and at Queen's Medical Center before joining our laboratory in 2001. Lori has a strong interest in undergraduate research mentoring and K-12 STEM education. She founded Chaminade's successful I am a Scientist STEM outreach program and is a board member of the national Mobile Laboratory Coalition.

Chad Jansen. Ph.D., Post-doctoral Researcher.

  • Dr. Jansen is a post-doctoral researcher who joined our laboratory in 2016. He earned a BS from Oregon State University and his Ph.D. in TRP channel electrophysiology in the laboratory of Dr. Andrea Fleig through the University of Hawaii CMB program. He has published 9 papers and is a talented electrophysiologist, specializing in TRP channel measurement. Hi published work has focused on small molecule regulation of TRP channels, specifically via cannabinoids and terpenes. He is also interested in the impact of complex polypharmaceutical of multicomponent stimuli (e.g. bee venom) on ion channel signaling pathways. He is the recipient of an NIH INBRE Teaching Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Troy Wooton, MS. Senior Healthcare Analyst

  • Troy earned his MS in the LAVA Lab at University of Hawaii and then joined us after a working as an analyst for the Hawaii State Energy Office. He is a specialist in Data Analytics, Machine Learning, AI and Data Visualization. His work and research lie at the intersection of Visual Analytics, Machine Learning, and Collaborative Systems.

    Connor Flynn. Data Analyst.

  • Connor is a Chaminade alumn and has his MS in EnvironmentalAnalytics from UCSB. He works on problams related to the UN Sustainble Development Goals and is a mentor for the NSF ALL-SPICE ALLIANCE AND AFOSR undergraduate data science reserach programs.

Beverly Rice. Graduate Student.

  • Beverly is an MS student in the MBBE program at the University of Hawaii, working with Dr Turner and Dr Stokes. She was formerly a Data Scientist with the DoD and specializes in Python, statistical methods and visualization. She is working on public health analytics and a novel pharmacological informatics approach to non-Western medical systems. She is a former Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience Summer Research Fellow and plans to start her PhD in 2023.

Tiffany Rivera, Graduate Research Assistant

  • Tiffany is a Chaminade alumna who is doing post-baccalaureate research on TRPV ion channel pharmacology.

Julia Howard. Graduate Student.

  • Julia is an MS student in the MBBE program at the University of Hawaii, working with Dr Turner and Dr Stokes. She is earned her undegraduate degree form UC Canta Cruz, was an NSF IGEMS fellow. She is working on pharmacology analytics with a specific focus on drug discovery pathways.

Our Collaborators

Dr. Alex Stokes

Dr. Stokes is our foremost collaborator, with over 30 co-authored papers and numerous shared grants over a 20 year period. They oversees our sister laboratory, the Laboratory of Experimental Medicine at John A Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii. Their team members are Alberto Gonzalez, PhD and Beverly Rice. They are an expert on TRP channel physiology and In vivo models for TRP channel involvement in chronic cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. www.expmed.org
